Now this is simply one instance where the “survivor” was on a populated Pacific Island and was able to steal food. But it shows some priorities…

Guadalcanal - October 27, 1947 - Holdout Captured Stealing Food
Four and a half years after the battle of Guadalcanal, and two years since the war ended, the last Japanese soldier surrendered. He was captured while breaking into the Honiara Police compound to steal food. His belongings included a water bottle, a broken Australian bayonet and a Japanese entrenching tool.”

A water container, cutting tool and digging tool…a lot can be done with those three items in that environment.
