I wanted to give my newly acquired Sebenza 31 a proper edge so I decided to give it the Rolls Royce treatment using my Grid Viva sharpening system. Arguably one of the best sharpening systems on the planet. The tolerances and workmanship of the Grid Viva is absolutely insane - which pairs up nicely with the tolerances and workmanship that a Chris Reeve Sebenza is also known for.

Grid Viva makes a one-stop sharpener that sharpens just about anything with an edge - without the need to buy any accessories. It also includes a magnetic platform as standard.

DeadboxHero DeadboxHero posted about it here for those interested :

I used my Venev Orion³ Series stones and sharpened to a new edge of 15 degrees per side. The factory angle was decent, but not consistent enough for my liking. Original factory angle was between 22 and 17 degrees per side, varying from heel to tip.

I'll have to do a few posts as I can only attach 10 images per post.

Let's start with some pics of the Grid Viva system :

I love these clamps, they can adjust to conform to just about ANY knife grind:

Carbon fiber, Titanium, stainless steel and aluminum bliss :

IMG_20230113_173239.jpg

It even has an adjustable "ramp" to match the stone mounted in the clamps so you don't slam the end of the stone into the knife by mistake :

IMG_20230113_173338.jpg

Not just plain old spring stoppers, they add an o-ring so the spring stoppers are smooth and has a soft stop:

IMG_20230113_173522.jpg

This is one of the only sharpeners that actually has a real usable and very accurate mechanical angle guide with no parallax error (I do still prefer digital though) :

IMG_20230113_173555.jpg

Bearing assembly for the sharpening stone arm mounted perfectly in the centre of the pivot, with the angle guide needle mounted right in the middle of the arm :

Engraving on the Carbon fiber table top, on the knife guide (when using the magnetic knife mount part of the Grid Viva:

Fully adjustable knife clamp assembly, and even a slightly wedged stop for the rotating assembly so it centres perfect and solid when your knife is flipped over:

So what's the story are these going to be available?

Checking the Sebenza Factory angle with my Vetako Goniometer :
Approximately 18 and 20 degrees factory edge per side in this specific spot, with a primary bevel of approximately 3.5 degrees per side.

And checking it again with one of my own designs - my Leading Edge Goniometer:
The factory edge on this spot on the blade was approximately 20 and 17 degrees per side.

Congrats on the new knife, and dang, that is a nice looking sharpening system. At an estimated $2000 in that video it seems like one of if not the most expensive sharpening system available. Those clamps are REALLY nice though.

Wow, that's a heck of a machine! Can we see a photo of the final result? I know that when I laid my Sebenza edge back to 15°, the resulting bevel was ... impressive. 😂

Sure, here you go. Pics should be big enough to zoom in.

It's a Venev F400 finish - unstropped, just the way I like it for every day use. Nice and toothy and sticky sharp. 15dps works well on this blade.

A phenomenal machine and a great knife, no doubt about it! A complete plethora of a machine and knife, but hey - that's what happens if the hole gets deep. 😁

Wow, that is as close to perfection as I have seen, what an incredible piece of equipment and am sure that anyone seeking the perfect edge would see the value here.

Luckily for me and my bank account, I am far from a perfectionist and can put a very sharp but not pretty edge on a knife by scratching them freehand on a flat piece of rock.

And here is the Venev F400 grit edge test I did on my Ermak / Gritomatic "Sharp-Metr" just off of the F400 grit stone, no stropping at all : 86 grams.

Results align very well with the Edge on up BESS tester if you pre-tension the line to only 20g. The Ermak guidance states to adjust the edge tester pre-tension to 200g but that's much too high, but I'm pretty sure that's a typo or mistake in their guide.

For anyone who has one of these edge testers, and want to compare your results with Edge on up, use a pre-tension adjust force of 0.02kg/20g before zeroing and selecting peak mode for your cut test.

What method did you use when clamping the blade to ensure the bevel was an even 15 degrees from the heel, through the belly, and on to the tip? Looks like your finished result is very even and the blade doesn't look to be clamped so the edge is perpendicular to the centered stone. I have had trouble keeping Sebenza bevels even and appreciate the help!!

Damn, I want one of those now.

My Sebenza 31 still has the factory edge and would look good clamped up in sharpener like that.

I spent my career in a Class A mold shop and that looks like something we would have turned out if we made sharpeners. Probably would have been way more than $2k though. Makes my planned purchase of an R2 look pretty pedestrian in comparison.

Have a look at my 7th photo in post #3 above. That is how I clamped it during this sharpening session. Basically, I had the tip and heel approximately in line & parallel with the sharpening clamp bar.

Thanks, another question: Any idea where to get a Grid Viva? Gritomatic doesn't carry them and told me they have no plans to carry them in the future.

As far as I know, they are handmade in very small numbers and haven't made any more recently. Gritomatic would be the best place to get information about contacting the manufacturer directly.
